Maternal Health Care:

Obstetrical & Prenatal Care for Pregnant Women

The Way Free Medical Clinic provides free prenatal and obstetrical care to low-income, uninsured pregnant women who reside in Clay County. The Clinic partners with Ascension St. Vincent’s Healthcare, which supplies Family Medicine Resident Physicians to provide on-site prenatal and obstetrical care during the patient’s pregnancy, and perform live delivery at Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville where the Residents have hospital privileges. The program includes:

  • Initial clinical assessment
  • Ongoing medical treatment/monitoring
  • Periodic laboratory diagnostics
  • Periodic ultrasound diagnostics
  • Prenatal vitamins and medications supplied
  • Lifestyle education
  • Processing into St. Vincent’s HOPE charity care program
  • Processing into emergency medical insurance coverage for hospitalization
  • Live birth delivery
  • Post-birth follow-up care
  • Referral to Clay County Health Department Healthy Start Program
  • Language interpretation available in all languages


  • Clay County residency
  • Family unit income 200% or less of Federal Poverty Guideline
  • Uninsured, or Medicaid with prohibitive share of cost or no provider available
  • Uncomplicated pregnancy or medical condition approved by St. Vincent’s physicians
  • Pregnancy term status no later than second trimester (or up to 28 weeks if other prenatal care has been in place) subject to St. Vincent’s physician evaluation
  • Willingness to promptly complete eligibility screening and admissions forms
  • Willingness to actively apply for and participate in St. Vincent’s charity care program
  • Social Security Number not required

Chronic Disease Care:

Comprehensive Diabetes Treatment & Education

The Way Free Medical Clinic provides free comprehensive diabetes care to low-income, uninsured Clay County residents. The program centers around medical care provided by a licensed physician along with self-care and lifestyle education provided by a Registered Nurse/Certified Diabetes Educator, and distribution of free supplies, including insulin, syringes, monitoring equipment, test strips, nutritional supplements, skin cream, compression socks, and shoes. The education component of the program includes self-care instruction on the administration of insulin, monitoring of blood levels, skin care, and diet and nutrition. A licensed registered nurse and certified diabetes educator coordinates all educational activities. The program follows the American Diabetes Association's national standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support, as well as those of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education.

The Way Clinic has access to some outside specialty care providers, who provide their services for free to clinic patients. Your doctor will talk with you about these options if your health condition warrants specialty care.
